Why summer is the smartest time to start orthodontic treatment
Every summer, families do something smart: they use the break to get things done. Driver’s ed. Sports camps. Checkups they kept putting off. And — increasingly — starting orthodontic treatment.
It makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Summer gives kids and teens time to adjust to braces or Invisalign without the pressure of school, early mornings, or a packed schedule. The first few weeks of treatment are the ones that require the most adjustment. Why not get through them when life is a little more relaxed?
If you’ve been thinking about scheduling a consultation, May is the time to do it. Here’s why — and what to expect.
The first few weeks are the hardest (and summer makes them easier)
No matter which treatment option your child chooses, there’s an adjustment period at the start. New braces can make teeth sore for a few days. New Invisalign aligners feel strange at first. Eating habits change. A new brushing routine has to become second nature.
During the school year, all of that happens while your child is also juggling homework, tests, practices, and early wake-up calls. During summer, they can take it at their own pace. They can eat soft foods without worrying about packing the right lunch. They can brush carefully after every meal without rushing out the door. They can ask questions and get comfortable without any added stress.
Most kids and teens feel totally normal within two to three weeks of starting treatment. Summer is a great window to get through that phase before school pictures, fall sports season, and everything else kicks back in.
Summer gives your schedule more flexibility
Orthodontic treatment involves regular check-in appointments — typically every six to ten weeks. During the school year, coordinating those appointments around classes, exams, and after-school activities can be genuinely difficult.
In summer, you have options. Morning appointments, midweek visits, flexible scheduling — it’s easier to find times that work for your family without anyone missing a test or practice.
Starting in summer also means your child has a head start. By the time school begins in August or September, they’ve already settled into their routine, their smile is already changing, and they’re ready to show it off.
What about summer activities?
A common concern we hear: will braces or Invisalign get in the way of camps, sports, or travel?
The short answer is no — not with a little preparation. Braces-wearers who play contact sports simply need a proper orthodontic mouthguard, which we can talk through at your appointment. Invisalign wearers can remove their aligners for games, performances, and swim meets. Travel is completely fine — we’ll make sure you have everything you need before any trips, and emergencies are rare.
We treat athletes, musicians, and busy, active kids every single day. Orthodontic treatment is designed to fit into real life, not interrupt it.
Common questions from parents planning a summer start
How early should we schedule the consultation?
As soon as possible — ideally in May or early June. Summer is our busiest season, and appointment slots fill up faster than most families expect. If you’re hoping to get started by late June or July, now is the right time to call.
Do we have to commit to anything at the first visit?
Not at all. The first consultation is completely free and there’s no obligation. We’ll take a look, answer your questions, and give you our recommendation. You decide if and when you’d like to move forward.
What if my child is nervous about getting braces?
That’s completely normal, and we hear it all the time. We take extra care with kids who are anxious about their first appointment — everything is explained, nothing is rushed, and we make sure they leave feeling comfortable and informed.
Is there a best age to start?
It depends on the case. Many kids start treatment between ages 11 and 14, but we see patients of all ages. If your child hasn’t had an orthodontic evaluation yet, summer is a great time for a first look.
