Life After Braces

The feeling after you finally get your braces off is amazing! Your smile has never looked better and you’re ready to show it off to the world. But did you know that getting your braces off doesn’t mean that you’re in the clear for the rest of your life? Teeth can shift slightly over time and undo some of the work that your braces did. The braces and your orthodontist did their part, now it’s up to you to keep your smile perfect. Learn the things to help you keep your smile looking beautiful forever.

Wear Your Retainer:

Your retainer is the very best defense against shifting teeth. Wear it exactly as your orthodontist recommends, and it should keep your teeth from moving over time.

Remember the Value:

Braces are an investment in both money AND time. Remember what it took to get your smile looking the way it did. When you value that investment, you’ll be more likely to take care of it.

Regular Dental Checkups:

You may be finished in the orthodontist’s chair, but it’s really important to keep seeing your general dentist regularly. Make appointments for checkups twice a year for regular cleanings and exams.

Guard Your Mouth:

Be sure to always wear your mouthguard if you grind or clench your teeth at night. You should also wear one during any high-impact sports or activities where mouth injuries are possible.

Healthy Habits:

Keep practicing good oral hygiene. Remember to brush and floss regularly to keep your teeth and gums healthy and strong.

Pay Attention:

If you think you may be seeing changes in your smile, don’t wait to contact us. It’s easier to correct or straighten teeth the earlier you notice a difference.

Contact Us for Help

A common cause of shifting teeth – especially for teens – is the eruption of wisdom teeth that can cause teeth to shift and crowd. Talk to your dentist or oral surgeon about how to keep your teeth straight, and call an orthodontist for their opinion if necessary.

Following these tips is the best way to make sure that your teeth stay straight and beautiful. Sounds easy enough, right? We know that you’ve got this! As always, if you ever need orthodontic care after you’re done with braces, don’t hesitate to give us a call. We want you to know we will always be here for you when any orthodontic issue arises.

Sports and Orthodontics

Nothing feels better than when your team wins the big game! But dental injuries due to sports accidents occur more often than you may think. An injury to the face – especially during high-contact sports – is almost guaranteed to break your braces or other orthodontic appliances. It’s also possible to injure your mouth, teeth, gums, and/or tongue. All of that sounds pretty scary – but don’t throw away your kid’s cleats just yet. Thankfully, mouthguards are an easy way to prevent most sport-related injuries.

Guard Your Smile

Protect your mouth with a mouthguard during all sports where a blow to the face is possible. Mouthguards cushion the impact if you were to get hit and significantly reduce the risk of broken brackets or wires. Mouthguards should cover the upper teeth and can also help to prevent broken teeth. It’s really important that kids in high-contact sports wear their mouthguards during games, competitions, and even during practice. Injuring your mouth or breaking your braces can derail your orthodontic progress and lead to increased treatment times.

Invisalign and Sports

It is recommended that your child remove their Invisalign aligners when playing high-impact sports – mostly because wearing their mouthguard takes priority when injuries are possible. However, it is generally safe to wear aligner trays when less intense or low-impact sports. If your child needs to take out their aligners to play sports, it’s important they put them back in their mouth as soon as they’re finished with physical activity for the day.

Game On!

When it comes to orthodontics, sports injuries are just part of the game. We know that our patients have active lives and that sports are often a big part of that. We don’t want to dissuade anyone from playing sports, but we do want to help you be as careful as possible. Think about your mouthguard as part of your gear. Like a helmet for your teeth! If you do experience a sports-related injury, call us as soon as possible. The sooner we know about your injury and the extent of it, the sooner we can get you back on track. We want you to have a beautiful smile on and off the field!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and our team here at TW Orthodontics is supporting the cause by encouraging our patients to Embrace for a Cure. Research shows that 1 in 7 women will receive a breast cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. Over the past few years, there has been an increased awareness of Breast Cancer Awareness. Because of this, more women are getting their routine mammograms. This is very important because it helps to catch cancer early. Join us to continue bringing awareness to Breast Cancer!

Join Us in Pink

The entire month of October our team wants to promote cancer awareness, education, and prevention. We understand that the disease affects many people and families. To show our support, we are encouraging our patients and families to wear pink to your appointments this month.

Embraced for a Cure

During the month of October, TW Orthodontics will donate $1 for every patient who gets pink elastics on their braces. At the end of the month, we will donate to breast cancer awareness on behalf of TW Orthodontics. Thank you for supporting the cure with us this year!

Treatment with Clear Braces

We often hear patients who are concerned about the appearance of their orthodontic appliances, and more specifically – braces. The good news is that now there are other options that traditional metal braces. That’s right – clear braces and clear aligners are both great options for many patients worried about how braces will look. (And this can especially be true for our adult patients!)

Clear Ceramic Braces

We’ve found that when people hear “clear braces” they almost always think of the aligner tray treatment plan. But that’s not the only option. Another popular choice for less noticeable orthodontic treatment is clear ceramic braces. This treatment plan places a natural-colored bracket that blends in with your teeth rather than the traditional metal brackets.

Even though the brackets may look different, clear braces work just like traditional metal braces do. They move your teeth using brackets and wires that apply pressure to your teeth. We think this is an especially good option for those patients who may be prone to forgetting to wear or losing aligner trays. Many patients find the look of clear braces an attractive way to undergo treatment and we agree!

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners tend to be a very popular orthodontic treatment because of their subtle appearance. Patients will receive a set of clear trays (called aligners) that are custom made for each person’s individual needs. Teeth are moved into their ideal position by the gentle pressure that the aligners apply. Instead of coming in for appointments to tighten the wires on traditional braces, a patient will just pop in the next aligner tray – which means fewer office visits too! The best part is that the clear trays are virtually invisible! Most people won’t even realize you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment.

Get Started with TW Orthodontics

We’re happy to answer all your questions about clear braces. We know the importance of having confidence in your appearance. There’s no reason to be insecure while achieving a lifelong beautiful smile. Clear aligner trays or clear braces can give you a subtle look with big results. Give our office a call today to set up a consultation and find the best treatment plan for your individual needs!

We Appreciate Teachers

Nothing makes us happier than seeing the smiles of our patients. We know that our teachers are a big part of those smiles. They’re shaping the futures of our kiddos and we’re shaping their smiles!

Back-to-School

It’s easy to be thankful for teachers this time of year, but let’s be honest – we should be appreciative of teachers every day! Let’s try to remember to show our thanks to our teachers all school year long.

ABCs of Teacher Appreciation

A – Arming Children with Education!

Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” We couldn’t agree more.

B – Beautiful Memories

In addition to teaching our children, teachers create situations that will result in lifelong memories. Think back on your time in school. We’re willing to bet you have many treasured memories that are all thanks to a teacher.

C – Connection with our Kids

Beyond educating our kids, teachers truly form deep connections with their students. We’re so thankful for the teachers that create a safe space for our kids to be themselves and learn every day.

Thank You Teachers!

Dr. TurnerDr. Wood, and Dr. Shelley want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the teachers in Alabama. We are in a unique position to watch the ways that our patients grow and learn over the course of their treatment times. We know that teachers are a huge part of that development!

Tell us about your favorite teacher. We can’t wait to hear about the ways that education has impacted your child!
